Steve Mezak, CEO of Accelerance, recently sat down with Lawrence Lerner, President of LLBC, a management consultancy providing services to companies seeking growth or change to discuss his more than two decades of experience in software outsourcing to China. In the course of their interview Mr. Lerner spoke about his four reasons to choose China for software outsourcing.
Reason #1 – Economic incentives. Like many countries, China has a special economic zone that is used to incentivize companies to come to the China. Companies many also find outsourcing partners who are offering a “great deal” to new clients. As a hardworking culture and emerging market, “they are looking to prove themselves as a player and can be aggressive when it comes to making deals and finding unique ways to partner.”
Reason #2 – Stability. Along with infrastructure and a great education system, you also want stability and consistency, so you can manage risk and change. You get all four attributes in China.
Reason #3 – Synergy. “Some mulit-nationals already have assets in China, so looking at software services may be a natural add-on,” Lerner said. “Great synergies can be achieved thanks to great relationships with current Chinese partners in manufacturing.”
Additionally, Lerner said taking advantage of intra-country communication and subject matter experts at your manufacturing facility really help during the software development process.
Reason #4 – Mobile development. China has a great depth in mobile skills, though there are more Android developers than iOS right now.
In terms of skill set, Lerner said that ERP-type systems, straight-out coding projects, and anything that’s already configured are great to outsource to China. “Open source technology is more widely used in Asian countries, and there are lots of great packages available for ERP systems, PHP, Ruby on Rails, etc.”
“While China is great at hardware design, software design for hardware (firmware, programmable logic, embedded systems) is still developing,” Lerner said. “Be careful when choosing a partner for software.”
